The Grand Canyon -
Just a day trip away!
ne of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon is located 2 hours from Sedona along one of the ten most scenic highways in North America. Drive through the beautiful Oak Creek Canyon up to the Colorado Plateau, with the world's largest Ponderosa Pine forest and it's view of the magnificent San Francisco peaks, and you will arrive at the Grand Canyon National Park.
Once viewed, never forgotten, it's easy to see why the Grand Canyon is touted as one of Mother Nature's most astounding accomplishments. The absolute beauty of the scenery is almost beyond belief. Many pictures have been taken, and some will capture a portion of the majesty, but to really appreciate the awe-inspiring vista, you have to take it in with your own eyes.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long and averages 10 miles in width from rim to rim. Its depth is slightly more than a mile. Carved over the millennia by the downward cutting of the Colorado River, it's been helped by the upward warping of the Colorado Plateau. You'll be amazed to learn that the rocks forming the Canyon were originally deposited at the bottom of a shallow sea before they rose to this magnificent plateau, giving you some insight into the eons of geological time.
For the more adventurous, there are several ways to see this natural phenomenon. Try hiking to the Canyon floor and back, white water rafting, a canyon rail tour or a scenic helicopter flight.
However you decide to take it in, and only a day trip from Sedona, a visit to the Grand Canyon will provide you with a truly unforgettable experience. For more information, visit Trips to the Grand Canyon.
